Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How is gratuity calculated in Oman?

Oman pays half a month's salary — 15 days — for each year of service, under Ministerial Decision 574/2025. A worker on OMR 200 a month for 4 years is owed 60 days of salary — (200 ÷ 30) × 60 = OMR 400. A minimum of two completed years of service is required; below that, no gratuity is payable.

How is end-of-service gratuity calculated for a domestic worker in the UAE?

Under Federal Decree-Law No. 9 of 2022, Article 19, a UAE domestic worker who completes one year of service is owed 14 days' salary for each year worked. The formula is (monthly salary ÷ 30) × 14 × years of service. A worker on AED 1,500 a month for 3 years is owed AED 2,300. Note this is different from the private-sector rule of 21 days per year, which does not apply to domestic workers.

Which GCC country pays the highest gratuity?

Kuwait and Saudi Arabia are the most generous at one full month's salary per year of service. Qatar pays 21 days per year, the UAE pays 14 days, Bahrain pays 15 days for the first three years before rising to a full month, and Oman pays a flat 15 days per year. On identical service, a Kuwait worker can be owed more than twice a UAE worker.

What is the minimum service needed to qualify for gratuity?

One completed year of continuous service in the UAE, Qatar and Bahrain. Saudi Arabia and Oman both require two completed years. Kuwait is the exception in the other direction: there is no minimum at all, and the indemnity accrues from day one.

Is gratuity calculated on the basic salary or the total package?

Gratuity is calculated on the last basic monthly salary, not on the historical average and not including allowances, overtime or bonuses. For live-in domestic workers, food and accommodation are provided in kind and are not added to the salary figure.

What else is owed at the end of a domestic worker's contract?

Beyond gratuity, the employer owes all unpaid wages, compensation for unused annual leave, notice pay if the worker was dismissed without proper notice, and the return air ticket to the worker's home country. These are owed even where service was too short for gratuity to apply.

Can gratuity be withheld or forfeited?

Only in narrow circumstances, typically dismissal for serious misconduct as defined in each country's domestic workers law, and the labour ministry decides case by case. An employer cannot withhold gratuity over a disputed debt, a broken item, or because the worker resigned. If gratuity is refused, file a complaint with the labour authority — MOHRE on 600 590 000 in the UAE, Musaned on 19911 in Saudi Arabia, PAM on 1884880 in Kuwait, MoLSA on 16008 in Qatar, the Ministry of Labour on 1502 in Oman, or LMRA on 17506055 in Bahrain.
