1📜 License Types

Which license you need — light vehicle is the standard

Most domestic workers drive a light vehicle (saloon car or small SUV). The license category is usually called 'Light Motor Vehicle' or 'category 3' depending on country. Don't try to drive trucks, vans over 3.5 tonnes, motorcycles unless you have the specific category.

  • 🚗Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) — what most workers driveSaloon cars, small SUVs, family cars up to 7 seats. This is what 95% of domestic workers need. Standard test, standard license.
  • 🚙Larger SUVs (7+ seats) usually still LMVMost family 7-seater SUVs are still 'light vehicle' category. Confirm with your driving school before testing.
  • 🛻Pickups, vans, trucks = different categoryIf your employer's car is a pickup or large van, you need 'light truck' or 'heavy vehicle' license — different test.
  • 🏍️Motorcycles need separate licenseEven small scooters need motorcycle license. Don't ride one on a car license — instant jail in GCC.
  • 🤖Automatic vs Manual matters in some countriesSome countries issue 'automatic only' license — you cannot drive manual cars. UAE issues both. Saudi too. Confirm what your license allows.
💡
Pass the test ONCE — pay attentionGCC driving tests can fail you for 'minor mistakes' (didn't check mirror, hand position wrong). Take the school's recommended hours, listen to instructor, don't argue. Failing 3 times means you wait months. Better to pay for 5 extra lessons than fail the test 5 times.

2📝 How to Apply

The application path — driving school, theory, road test

In GCC, you cannot just take a driving test like in some countries. You MUST go through a registered driving school for required hours. Trying shortcuts = no license. Ever.

  • 🏫Step 1: Register with a licensed driving schoolFind an approved school (Emirates Driving Institute, Belhasa, Galadari in UAE; Dallah in Saudi; etc). Bring passport, residency, employer letter, photos. Pay registration.
  • 📚Step 2: Theory classes + theory testLearn road signs, rules, signals. Theory test is computer-based, multiple-choice. You must score ~80%+. Study the official handbook in your language.
  • 🚦Step 3: Practical training (15-40 hours)Hours depend on your previous experience and country rules. Pay per hour or full package. Practice parking, lanes, signaling, mirrors.
  • 🚗Step 4: Road test with examinerThe examiner sits next to you and watches every move. Common fail reasons: not checking mirrors before changing lane, not stopping at STOP sign, scraping kerb when parking. Stay CALM.
  • 📜Step 5: Get your license — 1-3 days after passingLicense is plastic card with your photo. Carry it ALWAYS when driving. In UAE, it's also linked to your Emirates ID.
💡
Cost: 3,500 - 7,000 AED totalLight vehicle license in UAE costs roughly 3,500-7,000 AED (school + tests + paperwork). Saudi roughly 1,500-3,000 SAR. Most employers cover this if you're hired as a driver. Negotiate before signing.
📝
3📂 Papers to Carry

Always have these 4 papers in the car

Police can stop you anytime. If you don't have the right papers = fine + impound + jail risk. Never drive without all 4 documents.

  • 📜Your driving license (original, not copy)Original plastic license. NOT a photo on your phone. Police want the actual card. Keep it in your wallet, with you whenever you drive.
  • 📋Vehicle registration (Mulkiya/Istimara)The car's registration card. Stays in the glovebox. Renewed yearly by the owner. If expired = car is illegal to drive — refuse to drive!
  • 🛡️Insurance certificate (valid)Proof car is insured. Without it = huge fines + you personally pay for any accident damage. Check the expiry date when employer hands you the keys.
  • 🆔Your Emirates ID / Iqama / national IDYour residency card. Police use it to verify identity. Always have it. In Saudi, also keep your Iqama. UAE = Emirates ID.
  • 📱Photos backup on phoneTake phone photos of all 4 papers. If lost while driving, photos help. But always carry the originals — photo alone = still a fine.
💡
Keep papers in ONE place — never spread themOne folder in glovebox: vehicle reg + insurance. One in your wallet: license + ID. Never let your employer take your license off you and keep it in their drawer — that's illegal in many GCC countries.
📂
4🚫 NEVER Do This

5 mistakes that end your career

Some mistakes are career-ending. Not 'oops fines' — actual deportation, jail, lifetime ban from GCC. Memorize these 5 absolute NO's.

  • 🚫NEVER drive on someone else's licenseIf you don't have a GCC license yet but employer says 'just drive a little, no police' — REFUSE. If caught = jail + deportation + you go on the GCC blacklist forever.
  • 🍷NEVER drink alcohol and drive — even one sipGCC = ZERO tolerance. Even 0.1 alcohol = jail. If a guest at the home offers you a drink, refuse if you'll drive. The employer cannot 'cover' for you.
  • 📱NEVER use phone while drivingTexting/scrolling = AED 800 fine + 4 black points (UAE). Repeat = license suspension. If you must call, pull over fully off the road.
  • 🏎️NEVER speed dangerously to make up timeChildren to school late? Drive normally. Speeding = camera = fine + points. Worse: an accident at speed = death. The employer prefers late + alive over on-time + dead.
  • 👨‍👩‍👧NEVER drive with extra people without permissionDon't pick up your friends in the employer's car 'just for a ride'. The car insurance only covers approved drivers + family. Your friend in an accident = you pay everything.
💡
If in doubt — DON'TAny time you're unsure if something is legal/safe/permitted — don't do it. Call employer first. Driving job in GCC depends on being trustworthy, not on being clever. One bad decision = career over.
