The rules in GCC are strict. Speed cameras every 500 meters. AED 1,000+ fines for normal mistakes. But the rules are simple and FAIR. Today: the 30 traffic rules + 20 signs that cover 95% of your daily driving.
Most fines in GCC are for speeding. The limits are well-marked on signs every few hundred meters. Know them by heart for the area you drive.
🏠Residential streets — 40 km/hInside neighborhoods, near houses, on small streets. Cameras hidden. Speed bumps slow you down. Stay 40.
🏙️City roads — 60 to 80 km/hMost city streets are 60. Bigger 4-lane city roads are 80. Watch the signs every 500m. The number on the sign is the LIMIT, not a suggestion.
🛣️Highways — 100 to 120 km/hUAE highways: 120 km/h on most. Saudi: usually 120 km/h. Some sections drop to 80 in cities. ALWAYS WATCH SIGNS — they change.
🏫School zones — 30 km/h during school hoursWhen kids are arriving (7-8 AM) or leaving (1-3 PM), school zones drop to 30 km/h. Cameras active. Police standing. Slow WAY down near schools.
🐢Speed bump approach — slow to 20Yellow-and-black painted speed bumps everywhere in GCC. Hit one at 60 = broken suspension + your fault. Always slow to 15-20 over them.
💡
Speed cushion: stay 5 km/h UNDER posted limitCameras have a small tolerance (5-10 km/h). If sign says 80, drive 75. You'll never get a fine. Driving exactly 80 risks a fine if your speedometer is slightly off. Under is always safe.

2🚦 Lights & Signals
Traffic lights, signals, lane changes
Wrong-way movements at a junction = accident or fine. The rules are universal across GCC: red stops, yellow warns, green goes. Plus signal rules.
🔴Red light = FULL STOP — even right turns waitGCC does NOT allow 'right on red' like USA. You MUST wait for green even to turn right (unless a separate green right-arrow). Running red = AED 1,000 + 12 points + license suspension.
🟡Yellow light = STOP if you can safelyYellow means light is about to turn red. If you're far away — stop. If you're already in the junction — continue safely. Don't speed up to beat yellow — that's illegal.
🟢Green light = go BUT check left/right firstGreen doesn't mean 'safe' automatically. Other drivers run reds. Pedestrians may be crossing. Always glance left and right before moving.
➡️Always signal before lane change — 3 secondsSwitch on indicator 3 seconds before changing lane. Look in the mirror. Then move. Many drivers in GCC don't signal — that's why accidents happen. You signal.
🔄Roundabouts: cars in roundabout have priorityApproach slow. Cars already in the roundabout have right of way. Look LEFT (since traffic comes from your left in right-hand-drive countries). Signal when leaving.
💡
Mirror, signal, manoeuvre — repeat 1000 timesBritish driving instructors say: 'Mirror, Signal, Manoeuvre' for every lane change. Build this into automatic muscle memory: glance in mirror → signal → check blind spot → move. Same pattern every time. Repetition = safety.

3⚠️ Road Signs
20 road signs you'll see every day
Red triangle = warning. Red circle = prohibition. Blue square = information. Green/blue = direction. The shape tells you what kind of sign.
🛑Octagon STOP sign — full stop, then goRed octagon = STOP completely (3 seconds, count it), look both ways, then proceed. Rolling through = AED 800 fine. There's NO 'STOP' word in some — just the shape and red color.
⏸️Triangle GIVE WAY — slow, yield to othersInverted red triangle = give way to cars coming from main road. Slow down, look, only go when clear. Different from STOP — you don't have to fully stop, just yield.
🚫Red circle with line = NOT ALLOWEDCommon ones: no entry (red circle white bar), no parking, no U-turn, no overtaking, no horn, no trucks. Memorize the no-entry one — go in there = HUGE fine.
🚸Pedestrian crossing = stop for peopleYellow diamond with walking person = pedestrian crossing ahead. Slow. If anyone is crossing or about to cross — STOP. They have right of way.
📐School zone = slow + watch for childrenYellow with running children. Slow to 30 km/h during school hours. Children may run into the road suddenly. Drive like a parent — extra careful.
💡
When unsure, SLOW DOWNIf you see a sign you don't recognize — slow down, glance, figure it out. Speeding past unknown signs = blind to warnings = accidents. Better to slow + understand than fast + sorry. Confusion = caution.

4📷 Cameras Everywhere
Speed cameras, red-light cameras, mobile police
GCC roads are covered in cameras. Some you see. Most are hidden. Mobile police cars also use radar from parked positions. Drive like you're being watched. Because you are.
📹Fixed speed cameras — every 500m to 5kmYellow boxes on poles. Some flash, some don't. Always assume they're working. The fines come 7-30 days later by SMS or letter. Pay them or face license issues.
🚦Red light cameras at junctionsEvery major junction has cameras. They photograph your plate if you cross when red. Fine = AED 1,000 + 12 points + 30-day vehicle confiscation in UAE.
🚓Mobile police with radar gunsPolice cars sometimes park on side of highway with radar guns. Hidden in trees, behind buildings, at junctions. There's no warning — they just clock you and send fine.
🚁Drone speed cameras (Saudi)Saudi uses drones over highways now. Yes, really. They can clock speed from above. Hard to spot.
📲App to check fines: pay before they growUAE: 'Dubai Police' app or 'RTA Smart Driving'. Saudi: 'Absher'. Check weekly. Unpaid fines double after 60 days, then triple, then can lead to license suspension.
💡
Drive AS IF a camera sees every moveDon't try to spot cameras to break rules between them. Just drive correctly always. The boring truth: drivers who follow the rules pay zero fines for years. That's the goal.
