Module 9: Police Checkpoints — What to Say, What to Show
Police checkpoints are normal in GCC. Your job: stay calm, speak softly, hand over papers, answer briefly. Don't argue. Don't smile too much. Don't reach for things suddenly. Today: how to handle police professionally.
Police pull you over. How you behave in the first 30 seconds sets the tone. Calm + respectful = quick check. Panic + nervous = full search.
🚦Slow, indicate, pull over to right shoulderWhen you see police lights/sirens behind you: indicator on. Slow gradually. Pull all the way to the right shoulder. Stop completely. Engine OFF. Hazards on.
🪟Hands visible — both on the steering wheelDon't reach for anything before officer arrives. Both hands ON THE WHEEL where they can see. They check your hands first when approaching.
👋Window down, polite greetingLower the driver window all the way (so they can see in). When officer approaches: 'Good morning, officer. Sabah al-khair.' Soft. Calm. Slight smile (not big).
📂Don't reach for papers until they askWait for: 'License please'. Then say: 'Yes officer, papers in the glove box. May I reach for them?' They nod. Slowly take them out. Hand them over with both hands.
🤐Answer questions short — yes, no, sorry'Were you speeding?' = 'Sorry officer, I was not aware'. Short. Polite. Don't ramble. Don't make excuses. Don't argue facts now.
💡
RESPECT > ARGUMENTEven if you didn't do what they say — argue at the road = bigger fine + maybe jail. Take the ticket. Sign politely. Argue at the police station / tribunal next day with all the facts. Road = obey. Office = appeal.
👮
2📂 Papers Ready
Always have these ready in 10 seconds
When officer asks for papers, you should produce all 4 in 10 seconds. Fumbling = nervousness = suspicion. Organized = trusted = quick check.
📜Driving license — wallet pocket, easy accessSame pocket every time. Don't dig through 5 things. License clearly visible when wallet opens.
📋Vehicle registration — glove box, top of pileMulkiya/Istimara at the very top of the glove box pile. Not buried under napkins. Ready in 3 seconds.
🛡️Insurance certificate — same folder as registrationInsurance and registration usually in same paper or folder. Hand both together when asked.
🆔Emirates ID / Iqama — wallet, separate slotDifferent from license slot. Easy to find. Some checkpoints want ID + license together.
📱Photo backups on phone — but originals firstPhotos are backup if you ever lose physical. But never offer photo when they ask for original. Original papers first.
💡
Once a month: 'paper drill'Sit in driver seat. Pretend officer asked for papers. Time yourself. Should be under 10 seconds. If slower, reorganize — wallet, glove box. Smooth = professional driver = quick checkpoints.
📂
3🚫 What NEVER To Do
5 things that turn a 2-min check into a 2-hour ordeal
Officers are humans. Some have bad days. Some are strict. You can't control them — only your reactions. Don't trigger them.
🚫DON'T try to drive away or runIf they signal pull over, you pull over. Trying to escape = serious crime. Multiple police cars chase. You go to jail. Always pull over.
🤥DON'T lie about anythingOfficer asks 'were you on the phone?' — if you were, say 'Yes officer, I was. Sorry.' They have video usually. Lying = bigger fine + suspicion + trouble.
😡DON'T raise your voice or get angryEven if you feel falsely accused. Stay soft. Take the ticket. Argue at HQ later with evidence. Anger at roadside = arrested.
📱DON'T touch your phone during stopNo texting employer 'police stopped me'. Don't film. Phone DOWN until officer leaves. Reaching for phone can look like reaching for weapon.
🤝DON'T offer money — that's a serious bribery crimeOffering 'a gift' or 'a hundred for forgiveness' = bribery = JAIL. Don't even hint. GCC police are professional and well-paid. Take ticket, leave.
💡
If officer is rude or unfair — file complaint afterGCC has police complaints systems. UAE: 'Dubai Police' app. Saudi: Absher. If treated unfairly, document later (date, time, location, badge number). File complaint. Polite at scene, formal complaint later.
