Module 8: Carrying Children Safely — Car Seats, Belts, Locks
Children in the car are your highest responsibility. One missed belt = potential death in an accident. One unlocked door = kid jumping out at red light. Today: every child seated, belted, locked, supervised.
UAE Federal Law 21 of 2018 + Saudi laws require car seats for children. Ignoring = AED 400 + 4 black points + employer in trouble. Plus the child's life.
👶0-1 year: rear-facing infant seat in BACK seatNewborn lies facing the back of the car (not front). Why: in a crash, baby's neck is too weak — facing back distributes the force. Always BACK seat. Never front (airbag = baby death).
🍼1-4 years: forward-facing toddler seatOnce over 1 year + 9 kg, can use forward-facing toddler car seat. 5-point harness clipped tight. Always BACK seat.
🧒4-7 years: high-back booster with beltHigh-back booster makes the adult belt fit properly across child's shoulder. Belt should be on shoulder + chest, not on neck or under arm.
📏7-12 years: backless booster (or until 145cm tall)Once kid is tall enough, backless booster lifts them so adult belt fits properly. Done when child is 145cm tall (around 12 years).
🔧Install car seat correctly = LATCH + tetherCar seats hook to ISOFIX or LATCH points (metal hooks in back seat). Tether goes to back of seat. Tight = no wobble. If wobbles 1 inch, it's not tight enough.
💡
If parents don't use car seats, refuse to drive withoutSome employers think car seats 'too much'. Politely explain: 'Madam, the law requires it. If we have an accident, I am responsible. Please.' Most agree. If they refuse — embassy/lawyer issue.

2🔒 Locks & Belts
Child locks engaged + belts on EVERY ride
Belts are not optional. Even 200 meters. Even if 'just to mall'. One sudden brake = unbelted kid hits windshield = serious injury.
🔒Engage child locks on back doors before drivingMost cars have a switch on the back door edge — flick to 'CHILD LOCK'. Then door cannot be opened from inside. Essential for under-10s. Test it works before driving.
🪟Window locks: no kids playing with windowsMost cars have a 'window lock' button on driver door. Press it = back windows can't go up/down. Prevents kid sticking head out at speed.
🔘Check all belts CLICKED before moving the carLook in mirror. Visually confirm: each child has belt across chest. CLICKED. No belt under arm or behind back. Drive only when ALL clicked.
🚫NO sitting in front seat under 12Under 12 in front + airbag deploys = severe injury. Always back seat. UAE law also says no front-seat for under-10 unless car has no back seat.
🤚If kid unbuckles mid-drive: pull overSome kids try to unbuckle while moving. STOP THE CAR. Pull over to safe spot. Calmly: 'Habibi, you must wear belt. We can't drive until you do.' Wait until belt clicks, then drive.
💡
30 seconds extra = saved lifeStopping the car when kid unbuckles seems annoying — 30 seconds extra. But the kid learns: 'no belt = no movement'. Within 1 week they don't try anymore. Boundary = safety.

3🌡️ Heat Danger
NEVER LEAVE A CHILD IN A PARKED CAR
Inside a closed car in GCC summer (50°C outside) = 80°C in 10 minutes. Children DIE in 15-20 minutes from heatstroke. EVERY YEAR this kills children in GCC. Never. Ever.
🚫Even '5 minutes to grab milk' is too longAC stops the second engine off. Inside temp climbs 10°C every minute. By the time you're back from the shop, child can be unconscious. NEVER leave alone, ever, no matter how short.
👀If you forget — DON'T panic, just NEVER forgetSet up reminders: phone + place handbag in BACK seat (so you check back when leaving). Tie kid's car seat with a colored ribbon visible from front. Anything to keep awareness.
📞If you SEE a child alone in any parked car: smash windowIf you ever see a child trapped in a hot car: SMASH window with anything — rock, phone, jack handle. Call 999. Police won't fine you. Saving life > broken window.
🤝Tell employer this rule day 1Some parents say 'I just leave for 5 min'. Tell day 1: 'Madam, GCC law and safety: I never leave children alone in car. Even 5 minutes can be deadly.' Most agree immediately.
📵Phone away from baby car seatDon't put phone in the car seat 'just for a sec'. You'll forget kid is there + walk away. Phone in driver door pocket only.
💡
Habit: glance at back seat EVERY exitEvery single time you turn off the engine — glance over your shoulder at the back seat. Even if 'no kids today'. Make it a 0.5-second habit. Saves the day you forget. Glance back = save a life.
