The Dubai-Abu Dhabi run. The Riyadh-Jeddah trip. Long highway drives need different skills than city driving. Today: planning long trips, fuel/rest stops, fatigue, and what to do if you break down on a desert highway.
Long trips fail when you don't plan ahead. Map, fuel, food, rest, weather. 30 min planning the night before = safe arrival next day.
🗺️Map the route on Google Maps the night beforeSearch destination. Note total km + estimated time. Save offline. Know main road numbers (E11, E44 in UAE). Print as backup if no signal mid-desert.
⛽Note fuel stations along route — every 100kmGCC highways have fuel stations regularly but desert sections may have 100+ km gaps. Mark on map. Plan to fill up at each one — never let tank go below 1/4.
🌤️Check weather forecast for travel daySandstorm warning? Reschedule if possible. Heavy rain (winter)? Drive slower. Hot day (50°C+)? Tire blowout risk — check tires extra carefully.
🍱Pack food + water for 4 hoursEven on a 2-hour trip — bring 4 hours of food/water in case of breakdown or traffic jam. Children dehydrate fast in summer.
📞Tell employer route + ETA before leaving'Madam, leaving 7 AM. Route: E11 to Abu Dhabi. ETA 9 AM at the Emirates Palace. Will text you when I arrive.' They know if something's wrong.
💡
Plan for 1.5x estimated timeGoogle says '90 minutes'? Plan 135 min — accounting for fuel stop, traffic, rest. Arrive with buffer = no speeding. Late = panic = crash. Buffer = safety.
📅
2😴 Fatigue
Sleepy driver = killer driver
GCC highways are boring straight desert roads. After 2 hours, eyes start drifting. Microsleep = 3 seconds of nothing = crash at 120 km/h. Fatigue is THE #1 long-trip killer.
⏰Stop every 2 hours, walk for 5 minutesEven if not tired. Fuel station stop. Get out. Walk around the car. Drink water. Stretch. Restart with fresh blood flow.
☕Coffee/tea at the start, NOT mid-fatigueCaffeine works for 4 hours. Drink before tired, not after. If already yawning + tea won't work — STOP and rest 20 min.
🪟Window down, cold AC, music = wake yourselfTricks to stay awake: cold AC blast on face, window cracked open, upbeat music. Combine all 3 if very tired. But these don't replace sleep.
😴Heavy eyelids = pull over, sleep 20 minIf you can't keep eyes open: pull over to gas station or rest area. Lock car. Sleep 15-20 min. Set alarm. Wake up, splash water, continue. Better 30 min late than dead.
🚫NEVER drive 11 PM - 5 AM if avoidableBody's natural sleep window. Highest fatigue accidents. If you must drive overnight (employer travel), take co-driver if possible. Or drive only 1-2 hours then sleep.
💡
If unsure — STOPAsking yourself 'am I too tired to drive?' = answer is YES. Pull over. Rest. Driving while questioning your alertness is already too risky. Doubt = stop.
😴
3🆘 Breakdown
Highway breakdown — STAY WITH CAR
Car breaks down on desert highway. STAY IN OR NEAR THE CAR. Walking on highway = death from heat or hit by truck. Your car is your shelter and your visibility.
🛑Pull over as far right as possible — past the shoulder lineUse indicator. Move to right shoulder. Get FAR right — wheels on dirt if possible. Big trucks don't always see stopped cars.
🚨Hazard lights ON — leave them onAll four indicators flashing. Day or night. Visible 1 km away. Leaves them on while you wait — even if battery drains.
📐Triangle warning sign, 100 meters backMost GCC cars have a red warning triangle in the trunk. Place it 100m behind your car (75 paces). Other drivers see it, slow down, change lane.
📞Call employer + tow service immediatelyTell employer: 'Madam, car broke down on E11 at km 47. I am safe. Calling tow.' Then call AAA (UAE 800-AAA), tow service, or RTA.
💧Stay in car (AC-on if possible) — drink waterDon't walk on highway. Don't try to fix in 50°C heat. Stay inside with AC running until tow arrives. Drink water. Stay calm.
💡
Children: keep them IN the carIf kids are with you in breakdown: keep them IN car (with AC or windows cracked). Never let them stand near road. Trucks at 120 don't see small kids. Inside = safe. Outside = danger.
