1🧷 Diaper Changing

The right way — every time

Diaper changes happen 10-12 times a day for newborns. Done right = clean, comfortable baby. Done wrong = rash, infection, urinary problems (especially for girls). Master this technique.

  • Change every 2-3 hoursOr sooner if dirty. Never let a wet diaper sit longer.
  • 🧼Wash hands first AND after20 seconds. Bacteria from poop is serious.
  • 👀ONE hand on baby ALWAYSBabies roll. Even newborns. Hand on chest. NEVER walk away from changing table.
  • 👧Girls: front to backALWAYS. Wiping back-to-front spreads bacteria → urinary infections.
  • 👦Boys: cover with clothAir = pee fountain. Cover gently while you change.
  • 💨Air-dry 30 secondsBefore fresh diaper. Reduces rash dramatically.
  • 📏Diaper not too tightTwo fingers should fit at waist. Tight = leaks AND discomfort.
💡
Smell checkStrong ammonia smell = urinary tract infection sign. Bloody or black-green poop = call doctor. Watery diarrhea = dehydration risk. What's in the diaper tells you about the baby's health! 👃
🧷
2🌹 Rash Prevention

Stop diaper rash before it starts

Diaper rash is painful for baby and stressful for mom. The good news: 90% preventable. The bad news: once it starts, it takes days to heal. Prevention is everything.

  • 💧Change wet diapers FASTWet skin + acidic urine = rash factory. Speed matters.
  • 💨Air time daily10-15 min naked time after bath. Skin needs to BREATHE.
  • 🧴Barrier cream every changeZinc oxide / petroleum jelly. Thin layer. Creates a moisture shield.
  • 🧻Pat dry — don't rubSoft towel, gentle pats. Rubbing irritates already-sensitive skin.
  • 🚫Avoid scented wipesFragrances irritate. Plain water + soft cloth is best for sensitive babies.
  • 🌡️Watch for severe rashBright red, raised, or with white spots = yeast infection. Tell mom — needs cream from doctor.
⚠️
When to call doctorRash that bleeds, has blisters, or doesn't improve after 3 days needs a doctor. Could be yeast, bacterial infection, or allergy. Don't wait — these get bad fast! 🚨
🌹
3🛁 Safe Bathing

Water + baby = ALWAYS supervised

Bath time should be fun — but it's also the #1 location for child accidents. Drowning happens in 2 inches of water in seconds. ZERO distractions during bath.

  • 🌡️Water 37-38°CTest with elbow or thermometer. Should feel warm, NOT hot.
  • 📵Phone in another roomNO calls. NO texts. NO pictures. Eyes on baby ENTIRE time.
  • 🚫NEVER leave — even 5 secondsForgot the towel? Bring baby with you. Drowning takes 30 seconds.
  • ONE hand on baby alwaysSlippery + wiggly. Hand under armpit/head EVERY second.
  • 💧Shallow water (5-7 cm)Newborns: barely covers their bottom. Plenty for cleaning.
  • 👂Don't get water in earsTilt head back gently. Water in ear canal = ear infection.
  • ⏱️Bath = 5-10 min maxSkin gets dry. Babies get cold. Quick, efficient, fun.
💡
Bath supplies BEFORE bathGet EVERYTHING ready before water touches baby: towel, diaper, clothes, lotion. Once baby is in the water, you're not leaving for ANY reason. Plan ahead! 📋

4✂️ Nails & Teeth

Tiny details that matter big

Babies scratch their faces — sometimes badly. Long nails are also a hygiene issue. Plus mouth care starts BEFORE teeth come in. These small things show parents you really care.

  • ✂️Trim nails when sleepingEasier and safer. Use baby nail scissors (rounded) or file.
  • 📏Cut straight acrossDon't curve. Curved cuts cause ingrown nails.
  • 🩸If you cut skinPress clean tissue gently. Apply tiny bit of clean water. Don't panic — happens to everyone.
  • 🦷Wipe gums dailyFrom day 1. Soft cloth + water. Removes milk buildup, prevents thrush.
  • 🪥First tooth (~6 months)Switch to silicone finger brush. NO toothpaste yet.
  • 🍼Never bottle to bedMilk + sleeping = tooth decay (even baby teeth!) and ear infections.
💡
Nail timingNewborns: trim every 2-3 days (nails grow fast!). Older babies: weekly. NEVER bite baby's nails — your mouth bacteria can cause infection in their finger! 🚫
