1📊 Sleep by Age

How much should they sleep?

Sleep needs change rapidly in the first years. Knowing what's normal helps you make smart choices — and reassures parents. These are research-backed averages.

  • 👶Newborn (0-3mo): 14-17 hrIn 2-3 hour stretches. Day-night reversal is normal early on.
  • 🧒Infant (4-11mo): 12-15 hrIncluding 2-3 naps. Most can sleep 6-8 hr stretches at night by 6 mo.
  • 👦Toddler (1-2yr): 11-14 hr1-2 naps. Total around 12 hr night + 1-2 hr nap.
  • 👧Preschool (3-5yr): 10-13 hrOften drops nap by age 4-5. Quiet time still important.
  • 🌗Newborns wake every 2-3 hrTo eat. Normal. Don't try to 'sleep train' under 4 months.
  • 🌙By 6 monthsMany sleep 6-8 hr at night. By 1 year, often 10-12 hr.
💡
Watch sleepy cuesYawning, eye-rubbing, ear-pulling, fussiness, staring blankly = sleep window OPEN. Wait too long and you get an OVER-tired baby (much harder to settle). Catch the wave! 🌊
💤
2🛁 Bedtime Routine

The 4-B Bedtime: Bath, Bottle, Book, Bed

Babies thrive on routine. Same steps, same order, same time = brain learns 'sleep is coming'. After 2 weeks of consistency, sleep gets MUCH easier. Magic? No. Science!

  • 🛁Bath (5 min, warm)Warm water + dim lights = sleepy signal. Don't make it a play time.
  • 🧴Lotion massage (5 min)Gentle. Calming. Bond-building. Lavender baby lotion is great.
  • 🍼Bottle/breast (15 min)Last feed of day. Quiet, dim room. Burp well.
  • 📖Book or song (5 min)Same 1-2 books every night. Repetition = comfort.
  • 🛏️Bed AWAKEPut baby down drowsy but awake. They learn to fall asleep without rocking.
  • 🌙Dim lights, white noiseSame sleep environment every night. Consistency = security.
🌟
Same time, every nightSet bedtime within a 30-min window every day. Baby's body builds a circadian rhythm. After 2 weeks of consistency, you'll be SHOCKED how much easier bedtime becomes. ⏰

3🤱 Soothing Tools

When baby won't sleep — try these

Even with the best routine, some nights are hard. These are the techniques that work for 90% of babies. Try them in order. Stay calm. It WILL pass.

  • 🤱Swaddle (under 3 mo)Tight burrito wrap. Mimics womb. Stops startle reflex from waking baby.
  • ↔️Side or stomach to sootheHold side/tummy in your arms (NOT to sleep!). Settles fussiness.
  • 🤫SHHHHHH loudlySame volume as baby's cry. Mimics womb sounds. Sounds odd, works miracles.
  • 🪨Rhythmic motionSway, rock, gentle bounce. NEVER shake. Steady rhythm is key.
  • 🍼Suck (pacifier)Calming reflex. Pacifier okay AFTER breastfeeding is established (4 weeks+).
  • 🎵White noiseFan, app, machine. Drowns out household sounds. Consistent shushing = sleepy brain.
💡
10-minute ruleIf baby cries for 10+ minutes, you can try the next technique. Sometimes you have to TRY all 5 S's together — swaddle + side + shush + sway + suck = magic. Trust the process. ✨
🤱
4🚫 Sleep Traps

Mistakes that wreck sleep for MONTHS

Some 'shortcuts' feel easier in the moment but create terrible sleep habits that take months to fix. Avoid these from day 1 and you save the family endless suffering.

  • 🍼Bottle-to-sleepBaby learns 'bottle = sleep'. Now they NEED bottle to fall back asleep. Plus tooth decay.
  • 🚗Car/stroller naps onlyIf baby ONLY naps moving, you'll spend life driving. Mix in stationary naps from start.
  • 🤱Rocking-to-sleep every timeEventually baby weighs 10kg and needs rocking at 3am. Put down DROWSY but awake!
  • 📺Screens before bedBlue light blocks sleep hormone. NO phones/TV in last hour before bed.
  • 🎢Inconsistent routinesDifferent bedtime each night = chaos. Babies need predictability.
  • 😢Skipping naps to 'tire them out'Backfires! Overtired = harder to sleep. Protect those naps!
⚠️
Sleep regressions are NORMALAt 4 months, 8 months, 12 months, 18 months — sleep gets WORSE for 2-4 weeks. Don't change everything! Stay consistent with routine. It always passes. 📉
