1🌪️ Tantrums

Why they explode — and how to handle it

Tantrums are NORMAL from 18 months to 3 years. Toddler brains literally cannot regulate big emotions yet. They're not 'bad' — their brain is still building. Your job: be the calm. Stay safe. Don't make it bigger.

  • 🧠Their brain is still buildingFrontal lobe (self-control) develops until age 25. They CAN'T 'just stop'.
  • 🤐Stay quiet during the stormReasoning during a tantrum = useless. Just BE there. Calm presence.
  • 🛡️Safety firstIf they hit/bite, gently move them away. Hold firmly if needed (NOT roughly).
  • Don't bargain or bribeGiving in teaches: 'tantrum = I get my way'. Hold limits firmly + kindly.
  • 🤗After: hug + name feeling'You felt SO frustrated. That was hard.' Names it = teaches it.
  • 📝Identify triggersHungry? Tired? Bored? Overstimulated? Often you can prevent next time.
🌟
The Volcano AnalogyA tantrum is a volcano. You CAN'T stop it once it starts — you can only keep them safe until it ends. After, they need YOUR calm to come back to themselves. Be the rock. 🪨

2🚽 Potty Training

When AND how — patience required

Most kids are ready between 18-30 months. Pushing too early = stress + accidents + power struggles. Wait for SIGNS of readiness, then go all-in. Plan for 2-3 weeks of accidents.

  • 👀Signs of readinessStays dry 2+ hours, tells you when wet, interested in toilet, can pull pants up/down.
  • 🚽Get a kid pottyTheir own. Their height. Their control. Big toilet is scary.
  • Schedule sitsEvery 90 minutes at first. After meals especially. No pressure if nothing happens.
  • 🎉Celebrate WINSBIG cheer for any success. Stickers. Songs. They love it.
  • 🚫NEVER punish accidentsAccidents happen for MONTHS. Just clean, change, move on. Calm.
  • 🛏️Naps/nights take longerDaytime first. Nighttime dryness can take 6+ months more. Pull-ups okay.
💡
Boys vs GirlsGirls often train 2-3 months earlier. Boys may take longer. Both should sit at first (boys can stand once daytime trained). NEVER compare to other kids — pace varies a LOT! 🎯

3🏠 Toddler-Proofing

What they CAN reach now

Toddlers are climbers. They open drawers, climb chairs, push buttons. What was safe 6 months ago is dangerous now. Re-check the house every few months.

  • 🪑No furniture near windowsThey climb. Window screens won't hold them. Keep furniture 1m from windows.
  • 🔒Cabinet locks (kitchen + bath)Cleaning supplies, medications, sharp objects — ALL locked.
  • 🏛️Anchor tall furnitureBookcases, dressers TIPPED kill kids. Wall straps are essential.
  • 🔌Outlet covers everywhereToddlers stick fingers/forks in. Plastic covers on EVERY outlet.
  • 🚿Bathroom door closedToilets are drowning hazards. Always close door, install lock if needed.
  • 🔥Stove guardsPot handles turned IN (not over edge). Stove knobs covered.
  • 🪜Stair gatesTop AND bottom. Toddlers fall both directions. Hardware-mounted (not pressure).
⚠️
Get on the floorCrawl through the house at toddler height. You'll see hazards adults miss: sharp corners, loose cords, tiny toys. Eye-level safety check changes everything. 👀

4🥦 Picky Eating

Surviving the food battles

Picky eating peaks 1-3 years. Their growth slows so they need less food. Plus they're testing power. Your job: offer healthy food, don't fight, don't bribe with sweets. They WILL eat eventually.

  • 🍽️Offer 3 things at mealsAlways include 1 they LIKE + 1 you want them to try. No special menu.
  • 🚫Don't force-feedCreates lifelong food hatred. They KNOW when they're full.
  • 🥕Re-offer rejected foodTakes 10-15 exposures to accept new food. Keep offering, no pressure.
  • 🍎Healthy snacks onlyFruit, cheese, yogurt. Not cookies/crackers (they'll fill up = no dinner).
  • 💧Water between mealsJuice = sugar + fills tummy. Water during day. Milk at meals only.
  • 🍳Involve themToddlers EAT what they helped 'make'. Even tearing lettuce counts.
  • Same eating timesPredictable hunger = better eating. No grazing all day.
💡
Division of responsibilityParent's job: WHAT, WHEN, WHERE the food is. Child's job: WHETHER and HOW MUCH to eat. Stop fighting about quantity. Trust their tummy. 🍽️
