1🚨 Choking Hazards

Foods that KILL — cut everything tiny

Choking is the #1 cause of accidental death in children under 4. The good news: nearly 100% preventable with proper food prep and supervision. NEVER take shortcuts.

  • 🍇Grapes — quarter lengthwiseWhole grapes are PERFECTLY shaped to block windpipe. Always cut into 4 pieces.
  • 🌭Hot dogs — quarter long-wayCylinder shape = killer. Cut lengthwise then chunks. Or skip until age 4.
  • 🥜Whole nuts — under 4Choking + allergy risk. Use nut butters thinly spread on bread instead.
  • 🍿Popcorn — under 4Hard kernels lodge. Skip entirely until age 4+.
  • 🥕Hard raw veg — steam firstCarrots, celery, hard apples. Cook soft for under 3.
  • 🍬Hard candy, marshmallowsSticky/round = choking. Skip under 4 always.
  • 🪑ALWAYS sitting, NEVER movingNo eating while running, riding car, lying down.
⚠️
Size ruleAll food for under 4 should be smaller than their thumbnail. If you can fit it in a toilet paper tube — it's a choking hazard. Cut, mash, or skip! 📏
🚨
2🥣 Starting Solids

First foods at 6 months

Babies are ready for solids around 6 months — when they sit up, show interest, and lost the tongue-thrust reflex. Start slow, one new food every 3-4 days to spot allergies.

  • 🥑First foods: smooth puréesBanana, avocado, sweet potato, soft cooked carrot. No sugar, no salt.
  • 🥄1 tsp first timeTiny amounts to start. Most baby's first meal — they spit it out. Normal!
  • ⏱️One new food every 3-4 daysWatch for allergic reaction. Easier to spot the culprit if isolated.
  • 🍳Iron-rich foods earlyEgg yolk, mashed lentils, fortified cereal, soft meat. Iron stores deplete by 6mo.
  • 🍎Skin texture by 9 monthsMove from purée → mashed → small soft pieces. Practice chewing.
  • 🚫Don't forceBaby decides if/how much. Pushing creates bad food relationships.
💡
Baby-led weaningModern method: skip purées, give soft FINGER foods directly (avocado strips, soft pasta, banana spears). Babies learn chewing earlier and self-regulate intake. Discuss with mama. 👶
🥣
3🚫 Foods to AVOID

Foods that hurt babies

These foods are dangerous in the first year. Some can KILL. Memorize this list — and ALWAYS check labels for hidden ingredients (honey in baked goods, salt in adult foods).

  • 🍯HONEY — never under 1 yrCarries botulism spores. Adult digestion handles it. Baby's CAN'T. Can be FATAL.
  • 🥛Cow's milk — wait til 1Hard to digest, can cause iron deficiency. Cheese/yogurt OK from 6mo.
  • 🧂SaltTiny kidneys can't handle it. No salty snacks, no salted butter, no soy sauce.
  • 🍬Added sugarNo juice, no candy, no cookies. They train sweet tooth + cause cavities.
  • 🐠High-mercury fishAvoid shark, swordfish, king mackerel. Stick to small fish (sardine, salmon).
  • 🥚Raw eggsSalmonella risk. Always cook FULLY (no runny yolks).
  • 🍔Processed/fast foodToo much salt, fat, additives. Home-cooked always.
⚠️
Allergy warning signsHives, swelling lips/face, vomiting within 1 hour of new food, breathing difficulty = allergic reaction. Stop the food, tell mama, severe case = call 999/911. Note 8 main allergens: milk, egg, peanut, tree nut, fish, shellfish, soy, wheat. 🚨

4🍎 Smart Snacks

Filling, healthy, kid-friendly

Kids need snacks — small tummies + big energy. The TRICK: make snacks count nutritionally. Skip the chips and cookies. Healthy snacks set lifelong eating patterns.

  • 🍎Fresh fruit (always available)Apple slices, banana, grapes (cut!), mango, dates. Nature's candy.
  • 🧀Cheese cubes / yogurtCalcium + protein. Plain yogurt with fresh fruit > flavored sugary kind.
  • 🥕Veggie sticks + hummusAfter age 2 (when they can chew well). Hummus is GCC-friendly + nutritious.
  • 🥑Avocado on toastHealthy fats for brain. Toast, mash, sprinkle with seeds.
  • 🥚Boiled eggProtein superstar. Halve for over 1 year. Easy snack.
  • 🥛Plain milk + datesClassic GCC snack. Milk for protein, dates for energy + iron.
  • 💧Water FIRSTOften kids who 'feel hungry' are actually thirsty. Water before snack.
💡
Hangry = needs food NOWDon't let kids get TOO hungry — they tantrum, can't focus, get headaches. Snack every 2-3 hours during day. Always pack a snack when going out! 🎒
