ONE day, an emergency WILL happen. Your training in this module could literally save a life. Today: choking response, fever management, burns, cuts, when to call 999, and the contacts every caregiver needs. Be READY! 🚨
If child is silent + can't cough, they're choking severely. Do NOT slap their back upright (food goes deeper). Use these techniques. Practice in your mind RIGHT NOW so you'll act fast when needed.
🤛Coughing? GOOD — let themIf they're crying or coughing, airway is partially open. Don't intervene. Stay close.
👶BABY (under 1): 5 back blowsLay baby face-down on your forearm. Head LOWER than chest. 5 firm back blows between shoulder blades.
👶Then 5 chest thrustsFlip baby face-up. 2 fingers in middle of chest. 5 quick downward thrusts. Repeat back blows + chest thrusts.
🧒CHILD (1+): HeimlichStand behind. Fist above belly button. Cover with other hand. Sharp inward + upward thrusts.
📞If unconscious: CALL 999Then begin CPR. Don't waste time hunting for a phone — yell for help, call on speaker.
👀Look in mouth ONLY if visibleNEVER finger-sweep blindly — pushes object deeper. Only remove if you see it clearly.
⚠️
After dislodgedEven if the child seems fine after the object comes out — go to the hospital. Could have damaged throat or have residual food in airway. Get checked! 🏥
🆘
2🌡️ Fever
When to worry, when to wait
Fever is the body FIGHTING infection — not the enemy. Most fevers are okay. But some are emergencies. Know the difference.
📞Under 3 months: ANY fever = ERAbove 38°C in a baby under 3 months = EMERGENCY. Call mama and go to hospital NOW.
🌡️3-6 months: 38°C+ call doctorSame day. Don't wait for symptoms to worsen.
🤒6mo+: 38-39°C usually OKWatch for behavior. Acting normal = monitor. Limp/refusing fluids = doctor.
💧Lots of fluidsWater, milk, broth. Fever causes dehydration.
👕Light clothing, cool roomDon't bundle. Helps body release heat.
💊Medication: ONLY mom-approvedCalpol/Panadol etc. NEVER aspirin (Reye's syndrome). Always check dose with mama.
🚨Emergency signsStiff neck, rash that doesn't fade with pressure, can't wake up, blue lips, breathing trouble = 999 NOW.
⚠️
Lukewarm sponge bathNEVER ice bath or alcohol rub — those cause shock. Lukewarm water sponge if temp 39.5°C+ helps cool gently. Always tell mama before giving any medicine. 🛁

3🔥 Burns
Cool water — NOT ice, NOT butter
Burns are common with toddlers (hot drinks, stoves). Right action in first 60 seconds massively reduces damage. Wrong action makes it WORSE.
💧Cool running water 20 minCool (NOT cold) tap water over the burn for 15-20 minutes. Most important step!
🧊NEVER iceIce causes tissue damage. Cool water only.
🧴NEVER butter, oil, toothpasteOld wives' tales. They trap heat and cause infection. WATER ONLY.
👕Remove tight clothing/jewelry FASTBEFORE swelling starts. Cut off if needed. Don't pull skin.
🩹Cover with clean clothLoose, non-fluffy. Cling film also works for transport.
🏥Doctor for: bigger than coin, blistered, on face/hands/genitalsOr chemical/electrical burns. ALWAYS for these.
🏥Know nearest hospital5-minute walk? Have address ready. GCC hospitals: most have pediatric ER 24/7.
🚗Family car key locationIf parents need to come home fast — you might call a taxi to bring them.
📞Call mama BEFORE 999 (if non-life-threatening)She'll guide. For life-threatening = 999 first, mama after.
💡
Stay CALM = save lifeWhen you're calm, the child stays calm and you can THINK. Take a breath. State the problem out loud. Action steps. You've trained for this. You CAN do this. 💪
