Module 4: Defensive Driving — Heat, Sandstorms, Other Drivers
Defensive driving = expecting other drivers to make mistakes. GCC roads have aggressive drivers, sandstorms, summer heat that bursts tires. Today: how to anticipate problems and avoid 90% of accidents.
Assume every other driver will do something stupid
Most accidents happen because the OTHER driver did something unexpected. You can't control them — but you can anticipate.
🚗Keep 3-second gap from car aheadPick a fixed point (sign, tree). When the car ahead passes it, count '1-2-3'. You should pass that point AFTER you reach 3. If you reach it before — you're too close.
👀Scan ahead 200 meters, not just car in frontLook way ahead. Brake lights 200m up = traffic jam. Slow now, smoothly. Don't stare at the car in front — you'll brake hard when they brake hard.
🚨Watch for cars without indicatorsMany drivers in GCC don't signal. Always glance left + right before changing lanes — even if their signal is off, they might suddenly swerve.
🏎️Aggressive driver behind you? Move over and let them passTailgater flashing lights? Don't speed up — that's their game. Just signal and move to right lane. Let them pass. Don't engage. Their problem becomes their problem.
🚓Police = follow rules even more carefullyWhen you see police nearby, drive even more by-the-book. Don't suddenly slow down (they'll wonder), don't speed up (obviously). Just drive normally + correctly.
💡
The best driver is the boring driverDrama, fast, weaving = young drivers. Boring, predictable, smooth = professional drivers. You want to be boring. Boring drivers live long and keep jobs.

2🌡️ Summer Heat
GCC summers (May-Sep) bring tire blowouts
Asphalt in GCC summer hits 70°C+. Tires that are old or low-pressure can EXPLODE at highway speed. Sudden tire blowout = serious accident if you don't know how to handle.
🛞Check tire pressure WEEKLY in summerHeat changes tire pressure. Use the gas station's air machine. Follow the pressure number on the door sticker (usually 30-35 PSI). Old/cracked tires? Tell employer to replace.
🔥If tire blows: HOLD STEADY, don't slam brakesTire blowout = steering pulls hard. Don't slam brakes. Hold wheel firmly. Slowly let off accelerator. Steer gently to roadside. Stop. Hazard lights. Call for help.
🌡️Pull over IMMEDIATELY if engine overheatingTemperature gauge in red = stop NOW. Don't try to reach destination. Pull to roadside. Engine off. Call employer. Driving on overheated engine = expensive damage.
☀️Park in shade when possibleDon't park in direct sun for hours if avoidable. Inside temp can hit 80°C — damages dashboard, plastics. Use sun shades on windows.
💧Always carry 2L water in the carCar breakdown in 50°C heat = dehydration in 30 min. Always have water. Replace it before it goes warm. For you AND if children are with you.
💡
May-September: extra caution on highwaysMost tire blowouts happen May-September. If you must do long highway drives in summer — check tires before, drive slightly slower (110 instead of 120), pay attention to any wobble or pull. Heat = patience.
🌡️
3🌪️ Sandstorms
Sandstorm = stop driving, don't try to push through
Sandstorms (haboobs) reduce visibility to 5 meters. People die every year trying to drive through them. Don't be brave — be smart.
🌪️If you see a sand wall coming — find shelterBig brown/yellow wall in distance = sandstorm. If you can reach a gas station/parking before it hits — go. Park inside if possible.
🛑Already in sandstorm: pull over CAREFULLY, stopSlow gradually. Use indicator. Pull off road as far as possible. Engine off. Hazard lights ON. Wait for it to pass (15-60 minutes usually).
💡Hazard lights ON, headlights OFF when stoppedCounter-intuitive but: hazard lights help others see you parked. Headlights confuse other drivers (they think you're moving). Use hazards only when stopped.
👃Close all vents and windowsSand gets EVERYWHERE. Close windows. Close air vents. Turn off AC fan. Wait inside. Sand will still seep in but less.
📞Call employer if you're delayedSandstorms can last hours. Quick text: 'Madam, sandstorm on Sheikh Zayed Road, I am safe parked. Will continue when clear.' They worry less.
💡
Storm passes in 30-60 min usuallyDon't try to drive through. Other cars going slow. Pile-ups happen. Just wait. Storm always ends. Patience saves lives.
