Parking is where most small accidents happen. Mall parking, residential, valet. Plus navigating the GCC city — knowing the main roads, finding your destination, dealing with construction. Today: parking + GPS skills.
Most drivers fail their license test on parking. Practice in empty lots until it's automatic. Then park slowly + carefully every real time.
🅿️Parallel: pull alongside, reverse 45°, straightenPull up next to the car you'll park behind. Reverse with wheel turned 45° toward kerb. When dashboard aligns with car ahead, straighten wheel. Reverse straight. Straighten when nose is in.
🔙Reverse parking (back-in): always back-in to box spacesMall parking spots — back in. Easier to drive out (forward) when leaving. Look in mirrors + over shoulder. Slow, slow, slow.
👀Use mirrors AND turn head — bothSide mirrors miss kids/posts in blind spots. Always turn your head before parking moves. Slow. Stop if unsure.
🐢Slower is always safer when parkingThere is no rush. 30 seconds extra parking = no scrape on the car. Scraped car = AED 1,500 fine to fix + employer angry. Slow.
🛣️Don't park on yellow/red kerbsYellow line = no parking. Red line = no stopping at all. Fines are heavy. Look for white-lined spaces only.
💡
Practice in empty mall lot Saturday morningSaturday 8 AM = mall parking is empty. Take family car, find an empty corner. Practice 30 minutes of parking — parallel, reverse, between cones. Build muscle memory. Practice = no scrapes.

2🏬 Mall Parking
Multi-level parking + remembering where you parked
GCC malls have 3-7 levels of parking. Forgetting where you parked = 30 minutes searching with kids crying. Remember the level + zone.
📷Take photo of pillar/zone marker when you parkEach parking row has letter/number pillars. As soon as you park: take phone photo of nearest pillar (e.g. 'Level 3, Yellow Zone, Pillar 247'). Easy to find later.
🚪Note which mall entrance you usedIf you came in through 'Centre Court' entrance, EXIT through Centre Court too — parking is closest. Different entrances = different parking levels.
⬆️Lower levels = closer to mall but get full firstLevel B1 (basement) usually closest to mall entry. Fills fast. Level 3+ has lots of space but long walk. Tradeoff.
🅿️Look for available-space signs at level entranceMost GCC malls have green/red lights showing free spots per row. Take the first row with most green. Don't drive 3 floors looking for 'perfect' spot.
🚸Walking with kids: hold hand in parkingMall parking is dangerous for kids (cars reversing). HOLD their hand from car to mall door. Don't let them run ahead. Watch for reversing cars.
💡
Save common malls' parking pattern in your headIf you go to Mall of Emirates daily, you know: 'Magenta zone is closest to Carrefour entry'. Build mental map of regular places. Save 5 minutes per visit, all year.

3📍 GPS & Routes
Google Maps + offline backup
Phone-mounted GPS is essential. But know the basics by heart too — phones die, signals drop, you should know how to get home without GPS.
📱Phone mounted on dashboard, NOT in handUse a phone mount that sticks to dashboard or vent. Eye-level. Hands-free. Looking at phone in lap = ticket + accident risk.
🗺️Memorize 5 key routes homeFrom employer's home: route to school (kids), route to mall, route to grocery store, route to mosque, route to airport. Drive them WITHOUT GPS until you know them.
📡Download offline maps for your areaGoogle Maps lets you download a city offline. Do this monthly — phone signal drops in tunnels, basements. Offline map still works.
🚨Route changes? Listen to GPS, but use judgementGPS may say 'turn left in 50m' but you see road is closed. Trust your eyes first. Drive past, GPS will recalculate. Don't reverse on highway because GPS said so.
🛣️Know main highway numbersUAE: E11 (Sheikh Zayed Rd), E311 (Mohammed Bin Zayed), E44, etc. Saudi: Highway 5, 40, etc. When lost, find the main road number, GPS can reorient from there.
💡
Charge phone EVERY drivePlug phone into car charger every drive. GPS drains battery fast. Dead phone = no GPS = stress. Keep cable in glovebox. Always charged = always navigated.
